About spiritual care
In ancient times, people understood the importance of tending holistically to one’s mind, body, and spirit. As time evolved, we separated these interrelated aspects of our being. Today, we have medical practitioners and mental health experts to meet the needs of our minds and bodies. But what about our spirit?
Human beings, regardless of culture or religion, have core spiritual needs. These include connection, community, self-worth, self-esteem, hope, peace, meaning, to love and be loved, reconciliation, and forgiveness. We also have a natural tendency to make meaning from our experiences.
Spirituality is the dimension of life that reflects these needs and tendencies.
Sometimes we encounter difficult experiences that bring these issues to the surface. When this happens, we may rely on family, friends, and trusted mentors. Sometimes, however, we may wish to work with a trained professional to support us as we make meaning from our difficult experiences.
